In Murshidabad district, in the village of Baluchar (today known as Jiaganj), in West Bengal, India, the Baluchari saree was first created. This was in the eighteenth century. Since then, the Baluchari saree has continued to shine with its unique beauty and distinct characteristics, in the hearts of every Bengali woman.
Across its elaborate anchal (pallu), the Baluchari saree sometimes narrates mythological stories, and at other times, it depicts scenes from the lifestyle of Nawabs or Kings and Royals—carrying with it the testimony of a bygone era. It is said that once, a Baluchari saree was even sent as a gift to the Queen of England. Who wouldn’t wish to receive once again such a traditional and heritage-rich saree of our country? Without at least one Baluchari saree, even today, saree wardrobe of every Indian woman, feels incomplete.
