Santiniketani Batik

Santiniketani Batik is a distinctive Indian textile art that mixes the traditional Javanese wax-dyeing technique with Bengal’s artistic, nature-inspired designs. It was introduced at Visva-Bharati University in the 1920s and became known for using a brush (“tuli”) instead of the usual metal tools for applying wax. 

 Rabindranath Tagore came across batik while travelling through Java and Bali in Indonesia. Fascinated by the craft, he brought samples back to Santiniketan.

 His daughter-in-law Pratima Devi and French artist Andree Karpeles reworked the detailed Southeast Asian wax-resist method into a looser, more expressive brush-painting style that matched Bengali artistic tastes.

The “Tuli” Technique: Instead of using the traditional Javanese canting tool, Santiniketan artists mainly use paintbrushes to apply hot wax. This gives the designs a more fluid, bold, and hand-painted feel.

 The artwork draws a lot from nature and local Bengali culture. Popular motifs include lotus flowers, peacocks, fish, and the classic kolka (paisley) pattern.

 Santiniketani Batik is known for its soft, earthy shades rather than the bright, flashy colours commonly seen in Indonesian batik textiles.

Batik can be classified by the printing technique used. While the final look may seem similar, each method differs in durability, texture, and overall finish.There are four common batik techniques: block printing, hand-drawn batik, screen printing, and tie-dye. 

Santiniketani Batik is mostly done on natural fabrics like cotton and silk. It’s commonly used for Sarees, scarves, and dupattas, home decor items like Cushion covers, wall hangings, and bedspreads.

 The technique is especially famous on leather products like the iconic Santiniketani batik-embossed bags, wallets, and clutches.

The craft is still an important source of income for many rural artisans around Santiniketan in West Bengal, helping keep alive a long-standing artistic connection between India and Indonesia.Batik can be classified by the printing technique used.
